My DIY Photobox

Why did i build my own photobox?

Story time:

Once upon a time

….. I worked fo a company that called KRUU. This company builds and rents out photobooths, or as we call them in germany „Fotoboxen“. They are a lovely bunch, so cool in fact, that i still keep in touch with them! So if you need a photobooth, i can only recomand them!

SEO Sidenote: Im even still mentioned here in KRUUs robots.txt file: https://kruu.com/de/robots.txt

But back to topic:

So after leaving KRUU and inspired by my experience there, I decided to build my own photobox (especially since I stopped getting photoboxes for free).

What I used

  • My Raspberry Pi 3: The small computer that costs under 50$
  • Touchscreen: 100$ cheap used one with USB.
  • Printer: I got 2 broken printers, „modell canon selphy 1000“ for free & frankensteined (fixed) them to one working one!
    • -> I will make a blog post about how i did it soon. Basicly the grears were out & you can change them.
  • Camera: Canon, what ever works
  • Case: Milk box, yes the paper ones.
  • Power Supply: Stock chargers for the Raspberry Pi, Touchscreen and printer.

How It Was Done:

  1. Setting Up the Raspberry Pi: I run rasbian, the basic os, and i used this as a photobooth software, becase its free and opensource.
    • The settings could be adjusted easily, so everything ran just the way it was wanted.
  2. Connecting the Touchscreen: It was super simple—just plug in the usb & HDMI cabel, and the screen was good to go!
  3. Connecting the Printer: Also just plug and play via usb.
  4. Connecting the Camera(hard): Setting up the webcam or camera is the tricky part, for me the biggest challenge in the whole projekt! Why? Because we are working on linux, and sometimes you cant find the right drivers.
    • I got a Webcam from logitech and my canon working, the canon does a lot better in low light.
  5. Building the Case: A sturdy cardboard milk-box served as the case & gave the photobox a cool look.

Pictures will follow.
